This book is a continuation of the project “Afghan War 1979-1989 Through the Eyewitnesses (Oral history)”, implemented by an international group of researchers from the USA, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The methodology was developed by the project leaders Marlene Laruelle, Ph.D (USA-France) and Botagoz Rakisheva, Candidate of Sociological Sciences (Kazakhstan). The main objective of the project was to collect information about the Afghan war from its direct participants in order to preserve historical memory. This book includes the collection of oral history interviews with internationalist soldiers, participants in the war in Afghanistan. 21 interviews were conducted in Kyrgyzstan. The interviews in the book are given in their original form. The book uses photographs and documents from private archives of soldiers-internationalists. An exhibition “A Man at War” was organized and a documentary film was made. The authors thank the Open Society Foundation for the opportunity to publish the book.

 The publication was prepared on the basis of the results of a comprehensive sociological research, consisting of quantitative (407 interviewed Kazakhstani students studying in the People’s Republic of China) and qualitative methods of information acquisition (survey, conducted among 60 experts, statistical data analysis, mass media content analysis). In the course of the research, interviews were conducted with teachers, employees of international departments of universities in Kazakhstan and China, diplomats supervising education and culture of bilateral relations, citizens of Kazakhstan graduated from universities in China and working both in their homeland and in other countries. The picture emerged from the interviews and surveys was completed by the analysis of the speeches of the officials from both countries, articles in the press, statistical data of the Embassy of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the People’s Republic of China and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan, and the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. The research was carried out from June till December 2015.

The sociological research, conducted in 14 cities of China (Xian, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Lanzhou, Urumqi, Dalian, Qingdao, Nanjing, Wuhan, Guilin, Xiamen, Zhengzhou, and Hangzhou) among Kazakhstani students from 49 universities, reveals various aspects of educational migration. On the basis of a multilateral study of this topic, the research showed the importance of a continuous monitoring of the intentions of students, as well as the need for timely measures that will significantly strengthen the intellectual potential of Kazakhstan.

The book is intended for a wide audience.

A book "The Truth of the Turkestan Legion – between swastika and the red star" is being released for the 70th anniversary of the second world war. The author of this book is a researcher, scientist who has made an invaluable contribution to the development of science and culture of Kazakhstan, whose name is known among the Kazakhs of the world, doctor of historical Sciences, Professor of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University – Abduakap Kara.

Turkish-speaking soldiers who took part in the Soviet army in World War II and were captured by the German fascists experienced one of the most horrific tragedies in the history of humankind. One of them is the Crimean writer Cengiz Dagci, whose literary works and life path have become the object of many studies. In this book Abduakap Kara, researcher of Mustafa Shokay's art, dwelt on the tragic fate of hundreds of thousands of soldiers in the incredibly difficult circumstances of their stay in the Turkestan Legion, which took place during the war through which they had to go and which Cengiz Dagci described in detail in his voluminous works.
