Turkbarometer is a cross-country sociological study conducted from 2017 till 2022 by the Public Opinion Research Institute (https://opinions.kz/en/) commissioned by the International Turkic Academy (https://twesco.org/) to regularly study public opinion regarding such Turkic-speaking countries as Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Uzbekistan.

The main goal of the research project is to study the public opinion of the inhabitants of the Turkic-speaking countries. The study of public opinion of the Turkic-speaking world countries’ inhabitants is an important step for understanding the citizens’ perception of certain processes taking place in the Turkic-speaking space, the search for areas of activation of socio-cultural cooperation and forms of communication.

The first survey was carried out September to November 2017 in six capitals of Turkic-speaking countries: Baku, Astana, Bishkek, Ashgabat, Ankara, and Tashkent. The respondents were metropolitan residents aged 18 and older. In each country, 500 respondents were interviewed. The total number of respondents was 3,000 people.       

The second nationwide survey was held from July to August 2018 in five Turkic-speaking countries: Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey, Uzbekistan. The survey was conducted on a representative sample, 1,000 respondents were interviewed in each country. The total number of respondents was 5,084 respondents. 

In most cases, survey respondents are selected at random. Standard surveys are conducted in the format of personal interviews in all the countries-participants of the project. Turkbarometer surveys use different methodological approaches depending on the type or topic of the survey.

The results of the 2018 study were presented to the Presidents of the Turkic-speaking countries at the VI Summit of Heads of State, the Cooperation Council of Turkic Speaking States, held in Cholpon-Ata (Kyrgyzstan) in September 2018.

The third survey was conducted in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkey and Uzbekistan in 2022 in the format of an expert survey to study the opinions of the expert community of Turkic-speaking countries on modern pressing issues. The group of experts included scientists, researchers, practitioners in the field of exploration about values, identity, public administration, national history and culture, international relations, etc. Sample: 25 experts in each country. Total sample in five countries: 125 experts.

This study has been conducted by an international team of researchers from five participating countries.
