The methodology was developed by the project leaders Marlene Laruelle, Ph.D (USA-France) and Botagoz Rakisheva, Candidate of Sociological Sciences (Kazakhstan). The main objective of the project was to collect information about the Afghan war from its direct participants in order to preserve historical memory. This book includes the collection of oral history interviews with internationalist soldiers, participants in the war in Afghanistan. 21 interviews were conducted in Kyrgyzstan. The interviews in the book are given in their original form. The book uses photographs and documents from private archives of soldiers-internationalists. An exhibition “A Man at War” was organized and a documentary film was made. The authors thank the Open Society Foundation for the opportunity to publish the book.
