On February 23, 2024, the Institute of Asian Studies, Al-Farabi Kazakh National University held a round table on the topic “Ethnocultural enclaves as a factor in preserving collective identity”.

The event was opened by a special guest - Alexey Suslov (Volgograd State University, Russian Federation), who outlined the importance of studying the issue of enclaves on an ethno-cultural basis and the need to study this phenomenon in the context of modern globalization processes.

Within the framework of the round table,  Yulia Kelman (Ministry of Aliyah and Integration of Israel) made a report “On the Typology of Ethnic Enclaves “From the Threshold to the Museum” (on the example of the USA cities)”, Yelena Nazemtseva (Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Department of China, Russian Federation) – “The Reasons for the Formation of Russian Enclaves in the Chinese Border and the Features of Their Preservation of Ethno-Cultural Identity (on the example of the russians of three rivers and xinjiang)”, Vadim Akulenko (Chung-Ang University, Korea) – “The Phenomenon of Ethno-Cultural Enclaves of Russian-Speaking Koreans “Koryoin village” in South Korea” and concluded the program of the round table German Kim (Al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Kazakhstan) with a speech on the topic “The phenomenon of koreatowns – areas of compact settlement and contact zones in the Russian Far East of the late 19th and early 20th centuries”.

Each report was commented on by Yerkin Baidarov (Suleimenov Institute of Oriental Studies), highlighting the essence of the report, as well as noting the relevance of the content and drawing parallels with the realities of Kazakhstan.

Among the guests of the event were M.B. Syzdykova (Korkyt Ata Kyzylorda University, Kazakhstan), Maya Astvatsaturova (Pyatigorsk State University, Russian Federation), Marianna Smirnova-Seslavinskaya (Bulgaria), Leonid Petrov (University of Virginia, Australia), Botagoz Rakisheva (Public Opinion Research Institute, Astana, Kazakhstan), Irina Korneyeva (Moscow State University, Russian Federation) Kim En Un (National Research University Higher School of Economics, Russian Federation), Nazira Abdinasir (University of Debrecen, Hungary), Miriam Lowensteinová (Charles University, Czech Republic) and others.
